Roots & Wings

Begun in 2025, Roots and Wings is for congregation boosters, and anyone else who is interested in the future of progressive organized religion. As I entered a sabbatical period, I found myself pondering big questions, including what is permanent vs. transient... and how might we hold onto the essence of our UU values and tradition (the roots), while evolving to serve effectively today (the wings)? The Savvy Seeker

The Savvy Seeker is for people who are interested in things like spirituality, wellness, and personal development - people who may identify as seekers - and who would like to be savvy about their seeking. It was born out of my own experience, when I discovered in late 2023 that the meditation group I'd been deeply involved in as a young adult not only hid dark secrets - but fit the profile of a high control group.

The myriad crises and escalating uncertainty of our era heighten our natural, higher needs. But it's not an easy time to be a seeker. Traditional religion has lost credibility and appeal for many people. The Wild West of offerings available to seekers in our mercenary society mixes valuable growth options with opportunism, undue influence and worse. My posts are intended to support those who wish to seek safely and effectively in this context, whether they are new to the search or have been burned and are healing spiritual trauma - and whether they are rooted in a UU congregation, or are strictly free-range seekers.

I speak to the search for meaning, belonging, purpose, and well-being, drawing on my experience as a seasoned minister and companion to others, my own adventurous spiritual journey, and the study of everything from meditation and world religions to high demand groups and spiritual abuse.
