My previous career as a non-profit executive and organizational development consultant provided excellent preparation for ministry. Skills that have carried over include project development, facilitation, strategic planning, communications, policy development, staff management, working with volunteers, operating within various governance models, budgeting, fundraising, serving as a spokesperson to the media, and developing community relationships. I am used to functioning as an adaptable generalist.
In the parish I have continued to put this background to use in working with congregants, lay leaders, staff and beyond. The various ministry settings I have served in have also provided the opportunity to strengthen my skills in building trust, teaching and modeling covenantal relationship, addressing conflict, and leading change. I regard the work of organizational development and leadership as just as central to ministry as leading worship or offering a pastoral presence.
